Description

Description of ESR Tube (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate Tube):

The ESR tube is a narrow, vertically oriented glass tube with an open top and calibrated markings on the side to measure sedimentation rate.

It is used in blood tests to measure the rate at which red blood cells (erythrocytes) settle in a column of anticoagulated blood over a set period, usually one hour.

The tube typically contains sodium citrate (3.8%) as an anticoagulant to prevent blood clotting during the test.

Common tube size is around 8mm diameter by 120mm length, with a volume capacity of approximately 1.28ml.

The test provides a nonspecific indicator of inflammation and is useful for diagnosing and monitoring infections, autoimmune diseases, and certain cancers.

Proper filling, gentle mixing, and timely testing of the blood sample are essential for accurate results.

ESR tubes are designed for use in the Westergren method and automated analyzers to ensure consistent and reliable sedimentation rate measurement.
