Description

Structure and Key Features

Paramecia range from 50 to 330 micrometers long, with an elongated or ovoid pellicle—an elastic outer membrane layered with alveoli and epiplasm for shape and flexibility.

The body is densely covered in thousands of cilia, which enable movement and direct food particles into a deep oral groove or cytostome (cell mouth) running from the anterior to the midpoint.

Internally, the cell contains a macro- and one or more micronuclei (the macronucleus controls metabolism/growth; micronucleus manages genetic exchange/reproduction).

Two contractile vacuoles regulate water balance (osmoregulation), while food vacuoles digest and absorb nutrients.

Specialized Organelles

Trichocysts provide defense, discharging filaments when the cell is threatened.

Sensory structures allow response to stimuli such as light or chemical gradients.

Function and Lifestyle

Paramecium swims by coordinated ciliary beating; oral cilia aid in capturing food, mainly bacteria and small protists.

It can reproduce asexually by binary fission and sexually by conjugation (exchange of micronuclei), ensuring genetic diversity.

Found primarily in freshwater, it plays a critical ecological role as a consumer of microorganisms.
