Description

The PN Junction Diode / Semiconductor Diode Characteristics Apparatus is designed to study the electrical characteristics of PN junction diodes, demonstrating their behavior under forward and reverse bias conditions.

Key features include:

Two variable DC regulated power supplies, typically with outputs such as 0-3V/10mA and 0-30V/100μA, allowing the application of controlled forward and reverse bias voltages to the diode.

Two analog moving coil meters for measuring voltage across the diode and current through the diode with good precision.

Two PN junction diodes mounted inside the apparatus for practical experimentation—one used for forward bias tests, the other for reverse bias.

4mm banana sockets for secure electrical connections.

Compact size and robust construction for laboratory use.

This apparatus enables the plotting of the forward and reverse current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of silicon and germanium diodes. In forward bias, the diode shows a threshold voltage (around 0.7V for silicon and 0.3V for germanium) beyond which current increases exponentially. In reverse bias, the current remains very low until breakdown voltage is reached (not part of basic apparatus use). The device is instrumental in teaching semiconductor diode behavior, illustrating concepts like barrier potential, depletion region, forward conduction, and reverse blocking.
