Description

Leaves are essential plant organs responsible for photosynthesis, transpiration, and gas exchange. They exhibit diverse forms, but are mainly categorized by their structure: simple and compound leaves.

Main Types of Leaves

Simple Leaves: These leaves feature a single, undivided blade (lamina) attached to the stem by a petiole. The leaf may have lobes but the gaps do not reach the midrib. Examples include mango, guava, and oak.

Compound Leaves: The leaf blade is divided into multiple distinct leaflets, all attached to a common petiole. Key subtypes include:

Pinnately compound: Leaflets are arranged on either side of the midrib (rachis), resembling a feather. Types include unipinnate (neem), bipinnate (acacia), and tripinnate (Moringa).

Palmately compound: All leaflets attach at the tip of the petiole, radiating like fingers from a hand. Examples: silk cotton (Bombax), clover, chestnut.

Structural Variations

Leaves can also be classified by shape (linear, ovate, lanceolate, etc.), margin (entire, serrate, lobed), and arrangement (alternate, opposite, whorled) on the stem. Venation patterns—reticulate (net-like, as in dicots) or parallel (as in monocots)—are another common basis for classification.
