Description

Roots are vital plant organs responsible for anchorage, absorption of water and nutrients, and often storage of food. There are three main types of roots found in plants, each with unique structures and functions.

Main Types of Roots

Tap Root System: Characterized by a single, thick primary root that grows deep into the soil and gives rise to smaller lateral (secondary and tertiary) roots. Common in dicotyledonous plants such as carrot, beetroot, mustard, and dandelion.

Fibrous Root System: Comprises numerous thin, moderately branching roots that develop from the stem base, forming a dense network. Typical of monocotyledonous plants such as wheat, rice, maize, and grass. These roots remain near the soil surface and do not penetrate deeply.

Adventitious Roots: Roots that arise from any part of the plant other than the radicle (embryonic root), such as stems or leaves. These are found in plants like banyan tree (prop roots), maize (stilt roots), and grass (shoot-borne roots). Adventitious roots often serve specialized functions like support, storage, or respiration.

Modified/Specialized Roots

Some roots have evolved unique forms and adaptations:

Storage Roots: E.g., carrot, sweet potato.

Pneumatophores: Air-breathing roots in mangroves.

Prop/Stilt Roots: Supporting roots in plants like maize and banyan.

Root Nodules: Nitrogen-fixing structures in legumes.
