Description

Stems are the plant organs responsible for supporting leaves, flowers, and fruits, and for transporting water, nutrients, and food throughout the plant. Plant stems exist in several main types based on their characteristics, location, and adaptations.

Main Types of Stems

Herbaceous Stems: Soft, green, and flexible stems found mainly in herbs and small plants. Examples include mint, coriander, and spinach.

Woody Stems: Hard, brown, and rigid stems typical of shrubs and trees, like mango, neem, and oak. Woody stems are perennial and support large, tall growth.

Climbers and Creepers: Weak stems that either climb with support (climbers like pea and grapevine) or spread along the ground (creepers like pumpkin and watermelon).

Underground Stems: These grow beneath the soil surface and serve for storage, vegetative propagation, or perennation. Examples: rhizome (ginger), tuber (potato), bulb (onion), and corm (colocasia).

Subaerial Stems: Partly underground and partly above ground. Examples: runners (strawberry), stolons (mint), and offsets (water hyacinth).

Aerial Stems: Grow above ground and may be modified for storage, defense, or photosynthesis. Specialized forms include thorns (Bougainvillea), tendrils (pea), phylloclades (Opuntia), and cladodes
